eating alkaline

while on my little health kickstart cleanse i started to investigate more about eating an alkaline based diet (my naturopath had noted my body was sitting well into the acidic range) and i came across the following:

celebrity nutritionist kimberly snyder (drew barrymore, channing tatum) this little beauty is FULL of information so if you're looking for an informed lifestyle overhaul this is the one for you! plus every recipe i've tried has out done my expectations.

naturopath saimaa miller who founded the last resort organic day spa in sydney has created an aesthetically beautiful and well balanced book with both helpful health information and mouth watering alkaline based recipes. also i love it because it's australian! (jessica gomes is the books covergirl)

natasha corrett (sienna miller's step sister) and vicki edgson run a london based home cooked (alkaline friendly) food service 'honestly healthy' and have now created a cookbook that victoria beckham has been professing her love for and i can understand why! every single recipe looks ridiculously good!

all three books advocate eating alkaline which means cutting out certain acidic food and drinks that can create an imbalance in your pH level. the pH scale ranges from:

0 = completely acidic
7 = neutral
7+ = alkaline
14 = completely alkaline

for your body to be functioning at full capacity it’s best to aim for a pH level within the alkaline range, this means our body isn’t constantly fighting to correct an acidic imbalance. some symptoms of this can include:

fatigue
headaches
acne
brittle hair or nails
dry skin
lowered body temperature
sensitive gums, loose teeth and mouth ulcers
leg cramps and spasms
mood swings
digestive problems

my new eating ethos is mainly based on the beauty detox solution and watching the documentary forkes over knives, so my plate is mostly filled with plant based foods and wholegrains. some eating alkaline books like aussie body and honestly healthy still do include animal proteins and dairy however i’m trying to avoid both animal proteins and animal products.

each of these books has it’s own twist on the concept of eating alkaline and there are plenty of recipes between them incorporating different variations of this way of eating! if you’re interested in eating alkaline please do educate yourself, read as much about it as you possibly can and only ever stick with something that works for you. knowledge is power and with great power comes great responsibility, you only have 1 body in this life so learn to treat it with the love and respect it deserves.

after 3 weeks of eating alkaline i feel like my tastebuds have started to shift… i just don’t crave crap food anymore, i eat only when hungry rather than by the clock or from boredom and i feel like my relationship with food has turned a corner. i feel informed, in control and best of all i'm enjoying it!

my only set back with eating alkaline so far had been the cost. i was attempting to buy organic and this was causing me stress when swiping my card at the register! and then a friend told me about these organic fruit / veg boxes that can be delivered to your door! the box i went for is from CERES foodfair; they’re all about ethical, organic eating and a week’s worth of veggies for 2 people will only set you back $30. problem solved.

(for those of you not based in melbourne, try a google search because companies like this are popping up all over the place).

now remember i’m just at the beginning of this eating alkaline journey so i will keep you up to date with how i’m feeling but for now all i can say is i feel lighter (4 kilos to be precise), even more energetic and well on my way to optimal health.
